Since so many of us cannot make it on September 24 or 25, I would like to propose the weekend of Friday October 8 or Saturday October 9 as our next session. Any thoughts?
Mrs. Batman's birthday is Oct. 7, but she has generously and graciously offered our home to host the Oct. 8 evening if we want it. I must admit, I have a very mixed reaction (consisting mostly of the thought, "What's the appropriate gift for me to give for hijacking her birthday weekend?"), but I'm still excited about the notion of getting back to some serious trap-finding and monster-fighting.
With our group being so depleted, any thoughts on us rolling up second characters, DM? We now have NO FIGHTERS in the group, and we're down a cleric! I'd be happy to roll up a new fighter.
Andy, if we end up doing it the 8th, any chance of you Skyping in?
Now that it seems we've got 4 of 5 confirmed for Sat. the 9th (I hope Julia can join us as well!), I suggest that we play at my house in order to give Barb a giant birthday present. I'll even go so far as to provide refreshments and snacks as well. I intend to keep the dm well-liquored this session to help grease his stingy palm a bit...
Please give Barb my warmest wishes for her birthday and thanks for all the time she's sacrificed to give us a place to play, Jay.
Carl, can I get a ruling? I'm rolling up a fighter in case we need one--good old Gristle--and was thinking of having him use a lance as a weapon. However, I don't know how that would work when not on horseback. Any thoughts? No indication whatsoever in the book. I don't know if there were smaller lances that could work in hand-to-hand melee. Thanks.
"Common, standard hirelings are basically the usual craftsmen or laborers taken on by lower level player characters...In general the various occupations represented here are common to most settlements of village-size and above, although each and every village will not be likely to furnish each and every sort of common hireling." (ad&d "Dungeon Master's Guide", 1979) p. 28.
A careful (and at times even overly analytic) exploration of the traditions of "old school" fantasy roleplaying by two former d&d apostates who have recently returned to the game's roots. All advice and any suggestion is welcome.
Expect a particular focus on the retro-clone of OD&D, Swords & Wizardry as well as the occasional session recap from ongoing games. In our games we steal unabashedly from the great OD&D blogs linked to below.

I'm game for either date.
I could do the 9th, but not the 8th.

Unfortunately, I have plans already for the night of Friday October 8th. I'll be happy to roll up a fighter as well if we need one.
So just to be clear, Jay, you *can't* play on the 9th or you just can't host on Saturday?
I can't wait to get back to it either. The Grinding Gear will not stand!
Either night looks good for me. The earliest I could arrive on Friday would be 6:30.
Yes, I could both host and participate on the 9th.
Ahh, okay. Good to know Jay. Really looking forward to it.

Come on, Julia; we miss our thief!
I'm in for the 9th, assuming Carl has room on his couch.
OK then. We are officially on for the 9th. Can't wait.
Jay, could you reach out to Julia and let her know we hope she's there?
Any chance for a combined summary of sessions 7&8 sometime in the next three weeks or so?

Yes, I should be able to make the 9th. I will need a good and thorough review of all that's happened to the party, though, as I've missed so much.
Are we at Bat's or Post's? And what time?
Great news, Julia. We're set to play at my place (let me know if anyone would like another map) at 6PM on 10/9.
See you all then. Can't wait!
