I can relate to that. Every 'fix' I make to the 3E system to bring it closer to my personal gaming preferences (heavily influenced by pre-WOTC D&D, WFRP and Pendragon) just makes me realise I'm really only reinventing the (retro-clone) wheel. :-/

That's exactly where I'm at, Chris, although given the time I spent away from the game I didn't quite realize what my true preferences were until after giving 3e a shot for two years.
